When a property is threatened by fire, local municipalities often turn off the supply of electricity in order to prevent downed power lines from creating additional damage. Unfortunately, this also prevents the operation of your own home safety systems and often evicts homeowners that are not in danger from their homes.
Natural Gas / Propane Backup Generators
This is the most common solution to the issue of possibly being cut off from the grid. Our professionally installed generators will seamlessly take over from your municipal power supply. Within a few seconds of power being shut-off, the generator will auto-start and provide a steady supply of electricity to your property until power is restored.
These generators are usually connected to a supply of natural gas, however, if this is not available in your area, they can be connected to a large propane tank.
As with all engines, they should be maintained with oil changes and tests approximately twice per year, for a minimal fee.
Gasoline / Diesel Backup Generators
If a gas-powered generator is not an option, one solution may be a gasoline or diesel powered generator. While these, as a rule, are generally cheaper and smaller than their gas-powered brothers, they are usually cheaper to install and cheaper to maintain. One drawback is that they do tend to provide less power, leaving the homeowner to choose more carefully which rooms, appliances, and systems they will keep powered in case of emergency. Also, these generators tend to have an operating time of about 6-8 hours, depending on load, and will need to be manually refueled, just like a car.
Battery Backup / Powerwall
The new kid on the block, this is exactly what is sounds like. An actual battery, charged from your municipal source, or, usually, solar collection system, which will provide electricity in case of emergency. While the batteries themselves are relatively expensive, they are an excellent source of backup power, take up little room, and can be large enough to power your home for many days at a time, depending on configuration. One added bonus is that if they are combined with a solar panel system, they are rechargeable, needing virtually zero maintenance and only minimal upkeep and reducing your electric bill in the process.
